Hey there, would you like to have some fun, Cape Verde style? Then this blog is for you. We are going to show you some photos and ask you a few questions. See if you can figure out the answers, OK? You will probably need your parents to help you.
First off, look at the photo above. What season of the year do you think this photo was taken in?
If you guessed Christmas, you are right. Would you like to have your hair fixed up like this?
Grandma Broderick has a favorite Christmas tradition. Look at the photos below and see if you can guess what it is.
Here below is the finished display. Who would like Grandma to teach them to make such colorful and fascinating snowflakes?
Here are two displays of the nativity, or birth of Christ. Which one do you like best? Why do you love Jesus?
Now to try your counting skills. Look at the photo below. How many baby chickens can you count? How many hens and chicks can you count?
Was that hard? Maybe this one will be easier. How many boys do you see ready to play ball in this photo?
If you answered six, you were right. Maybe that was a tricky question since one of the boys is not ready to play ball. Which one is that? What is he doing? Do you know what the favorite game with a ball is in Cape Verde? You can ask your parents for help.
Can you see any animals in this photo? What kind of animal is it. Can you count the little ones?

How many did you get? Now, is the big pig a momma or a pappa pig? How can you tell?
If you like animals you will like this photo of a rooster. There must be hundreds of roosters just in our city. Every where we go in Cape Verde we hear roosters crowing almost any time of the day.
Do you like flowers? There are lots of wonderful flowers in Cape Verde. This one is call hybiscus. It grows everywhere and is very beautiful. Would you like one to wear in your hair?
The flower below would be a little big and heavy to wear in your hair, but there is another problem with showing this flower during the daytime. Know what it is?
It is a Dragon Flower. The problem, or the magic is, this flower only opens up at night time and only for one night. When the sun comes up, it begins to close up and die. Here is what the flowering plant looks like at night with light from the camera flash. What do you think?
There are actually two kinds of flowers in this picture: 1) those that have opened up for their one night of glory (can you count them?), and 2) those that are almost ready to open up (can you count them?). What do you think it will look like when all those open up? Look below…
Wow, what do you think? It is a beautiful sight. Can you see any flowers that opened up the night before and are now mostly closed?
What is your favorite holiday? Do any of you like Halloween? Look at this photo below. What does it look like?
Do you recognize any of these characters? Is there a costume here you would like to wear? But guess what! They are not dressed up for Halloween, they are dressed up for Carnaval, children's carnaval. These kids are from a kindergarten group and they have just come from their costume parade and festa (party). How many children are there in this photo? How many adults?
There are other times when people here dress up. Can you guess what event this is?
If you guessed it was a wedding, you are right. The woman in the middle is called Dilma. Isn’t see beautiful in her wedding dress. She got married by a government official in Cape Verde. A week later she went to the temple in Brazil to get married for time and eternity.
The two little girls have their fancy dresses on too to attend the wedding. Unfortunately many little and big girls wear dresses that don’t properly cover their bodies. That is not pleasing to Heavenly Father. Maybe you will have an opportunity to teach others about the sacredness of our bodies and how to dress beautifully but modestly. We think Dilma is a good example. Here she is again with her husband and Grandma and Grandpa.
Grandma always dresses nicely and modestly.
I bet some of you like to see airplanes. We travel in airplanes to get to the different islands where we work to help people. Here is one of the airplanes we have traveled on. Notice how people get into the airplane and what makes it go. Can you tell where they put everyone’s luggage?
Here is another airplane we have travelled in. What do you see anything different about it?
We have also traveled by boat. Here is one called the Fast Ferry that we rode on to an island called Brava. Want to go for a ride?
Here is a close up of the nose of the boat, except it is not called the nose. Do you know what the sailors call it? Look how big the ferry is compared with two fishing boats. Which boat would you like to work on?
Speaking of fishing boats, what do you think these boats are used for?
Do you like the colors of the boats? What colors can you name?
Maybe you like to see big trucks and construction equipment. Would you like to see these guys working? What do you think they are building?
These three look like they are lined up for a race. Which one will win?
The last thing we want to show you are some fish. We shop for fish to eat. Fish is a very healthy food, but it is very different from other foods you know. Some are very colorful like this one:
If you were to give it a name, what would you call it?
Here is a bright red fish that we like to eat, called a grouper. What do think this one is saying?
Some fish are very large, like this tuna. The cart behind has a whole bunch of smaller tuna. We buy 5 pound pieces of this fish and cook it up in steaks. Delicious. Have you ever seen a fish this big?
These are much smaller fish called papaguaio or parrot fish. Have you ever seen such big eyes? Why are they not smiling?
This one is not a fish. Who knows what it is called? His eye is looking at you.
